Oxfordshire, UK - Upcycling has really captured people's hearts in recent years and huge numbers of old items have been saved from landfill and remade into beautiful useful objects.

The word itself was originally coined in an interview by Thornton Kay, of Salvo in 1994 with Reiner Pilz (of Pilz GmbH. In a subsequent SalvoNEWS article (a black and white photocopied magazine in those days) Thornton Kay wrote: 'We talked about the impending EU Demolition Waste Streams directive. "Recycling," he said, I call it downcycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less.' At the time he was despairing of the waste of old building materials in German demolition under the name of recycling. "It was a pinky looking aggregate with pieces of handmade brick, old tiles and discernible parts of useful old items mixed with crushed concrete.' 'Is this the future for Europe?' Pilz himself went onto design many upcycled pieces such as pew steps turned into a pub leaner or drinks table and a bar front made from old door panels.

A number of exhibitors at Salvo 2017 will be selling professionally transformed reclaimed upcycled pieces. Salvage and antiques dealers are often very inventive. Upcycled window mirrors are a favourite like a porthole mirror from Insitu. Look out for an upcycled mangle wine rack from Beya Fontenay in the green fashion tent. The perfect way to showcase organic wines from Charity Gala sponsor, Vintage Roots. Exhibitors like Metroretro and Sugden & Daughters make their own fab pieces of furniture from reclaimed materials. New this year are Wineoak, another exhibitor to look out for who make a range of furniture and accessories from old wine barrels and Maison de Monterban who upcycle reclaimed products from the beautiful and ancient building materials of France. Gizmobots, of the daytime television programme 'Money for Nothing' fame will have their cute reclaim upcycled robots. And always a popular attraction at Salvo, DappR Aviation with their upcycled aeroplane furniture and accessories.

Lynne Lambourne, Love Nellie will be on hand both selling and demonstrating her upcycling skills. Lynne has often joined upcycling designer and television presenter Max McMurdo to promote upcycling, including the Upcycling Challenge. Lynne her own upcycling courses for adults and children.

There will also be lots of old items at the fair to buy and take home for your very own upcycling challenge. National upcycling day, 24th June even coincides with fair Saturday.
