London West, UK - Cinderella and Dorothy are proof that a pair of shoes can change your life and Out of the Dark is proof that salvage can have similar life changing potential. Founders Jay and Jade Blades created Out of the Dark in 2010 to recycle, repurpose and revamp salvaged furniture as a means to educate and employ young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Along with Vivienne Westwood, I usually fight the fashion corner of: 'buy less, spend more' and pieces (whether shoes or salvage) that satisfy your taste in style rather than trends. Do not worry though, I'm not going to lead into a lesson on 'investment pieces' or recommend the home furnishing equivalent of the trench coat. I rather prefer the thoughts of another fashion great:
'fashion must be an intoxicating release from the banality of the world' - Diana Vreeland
As I was writing this SalvoNEWS story I learnt the sad news that Out of the Dark announced its closure today due to the loss of funding. Furniture that is beautifully unique and a release from the banality of the world (whilst working to save it!) is surely worth saving. Calling a prince, or princess in shining entrepreneurial armour so that they may follow their yellow brick road Out of the Dark. This ending is not THE END.
