West Sussex, UK - A pair of large and rare Singer foundry c1910 lead urns sold for 20,000 [all prices are hammer prices excluding premiums and VAT] at last week's sale of garden ornament, sculpture and architectural antiques at Summers Place Auctions. As usual it was a sale of two halves - on Tuesday a live auction, followed by a sealed bid auction on the Friday.

The top three lots were modern sculpture. Mark Coreth's naturalistic playing jaguars made a low estimate 50,000, and Pablo Atchugarry had two abstract figural pieces which sold for 65,000 each against a low estimate of 70,000.

The top three antique lots were the Singer urns which sold on the live sale, followed by a Caesar summerhouse at double estimate 15,000 and a restored Edwardian seesaw which fetched a 25x estimate 15,000 - both in the sealed bid sale.

In the live sale other items of note were that the lovely Carron lidded stove urn finials failed to sell at 10k, a Coade pedestal sold for 6,500 (est 800), a pair of Coalbrookdale Osmundia benches sold for 5,000 each, and among a surfeit of signage an enamelled modern London street sign for Downing Street went for 5,200 to adman and collector Trevor Beattie and another for Abbey Road sold for 2,900 to John Antoniou as a present for his musician son, both estimated at 1,000.

In the sealed bid auction several De Beers carved Portland stone reliefs sold for 2,575 each, a classical carved marble 4ft 6ins long Hermes foot fetched a near triple estimate 11,000, and among a glut of modern London finger signs top lot was one for Buckingham Palace at 1,000 estimated at 100.

Among the modern sculpture sealed bid lots was a salvaged grindstone or whetstone upcycled with a carved maze design which sold for 2,000 against an estimated 1,200.
