Detroit News interviews Leslie Linsley on Salvage Style

Country Living Salvage Style: Decorate with Vintage Finds by Leslie Linsley Sterling Publishing/Hearst Books

Michigan, USA - All her life, author Leslie Linley has been attracted to junk. She understands the fun of a treasure hunt and the end result is a home with individual character and charm.

The Detroit News has a fascinating interview with the author and my highlights include her creative childhood filled with found objects and how she considers her own home a work in progress. Her own home has continually evolved over the years and enjoys adding pieces from yard sales, restoration yards, flea markets and local auctions. She also comments on millennials and antiques saying they may start out with a new kitchen but then warm to the idea of the character of a weathered item like a farm table. Then interest grows in antique and salvaged items as they become more confident in their own interiors design ideas.

Her own first home was a four room cottage in Nantucket. She had no money for improvements or decorating and relied on ingenuity by using recycled material and yard sale finds. It was at a time when landfill truly was the dump and one could practically build a house from discarded building material. Lesley created a backyard patio from bricks that came from a dismantled fireplace in an early 1800 house on my street. Over the years she also created brick walkways, two driveways and another patio, all from discarded bricks. In fact builders who knew of her many bricklaying projects began tossing used bricks into her yard as they passed by. It became a community project.

Leslie Linsley is a well known author of crafts, decorating, architecture and interior design books. Her weekly newspaper column has appeared in the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror for more than 30 years. Her weekly blog, At Home With Leslie Linsley, for the same paper, ha attracted thousands of fans. She has also been featured on Good Morning America, Today, Oprah, QVC, HGTV, and more.

The book gives lots of ideas and tips on how to find and reuse discarded treasures, such as old windows, barn doors, metal military desks, mailroom filing cabinets, factory lamps, and hand-forged iron hooks.
