A dealer's moral dilemma

COLIN Scull of Robert Mills Ltd poses some questions that dealers have to ask themselves. "The minefield that we have to pick our way through, without a legal background in the subject; the need to run our business in a commercial way and what is best for the reclamation industry in general. That is quite apart from whether we think that the planning / listing / conservation officer is being right and proper or unrealistic / insane."

So the scenario starts : A chapel in South Wales has closed down. They have sold off what items they could, but cannot sell the pews because they have been listed and may not be removed. This, of course, reduces the possible uses of the building . . .

Tensions arise between Snug Harbour and salvage company

SNUG Harbor in the USA was at the center of a dispute as tenants were outraged that the managers of the cultural centre had allowed Manhattan based salvage company Olde Good Things to remove valuable and historic materials from the building. Tenants believed that they were taking items indiscriminately with nobody around to supervise them. The site is a series of Greek Revival buildings that were used in the 1830s to house aging sailors.

Urban sprawl repair kit

salvo mag

Reburbia is a USA suburban design competition; entrant Galina Tahchieva has designed an urban sprawl repair kit with the intention of repairing the urban fabric. The design discourages demolitions of existing buildings and encourages re-purposing, often taking advantage of suburbia's typically excessive setbacks and parking lots. This set of simple infill techniques represents a sprawl repair toolkit to retrofit the five building prototypes that define suburbia.
