Quantitive Easing goes well at Christie's

STOP PRESS 1300 29 Oct 09: NICK Gifford-Mead was reported to be delighted with the preliminary results of his scaling-down sale held this morning at Christie's South Kensington. Among the assortment of dealers present on the floor, Steve Tomlin and Marcus Olliff said, "It was great to be in a central London auction room packed with people actually bidding."

SALVO is calling for the architectural salvage trade to lobby their MPs by 30 October 09 about a proposed new undemocratic law/rule. The government is planning to produce a new version of PPG15, now called PPS15 (Planning Policy Statement 15) which is out for consultation until 30 October 2009. It can be seen here
PPS15 Consultation
Thornton Kay has drafted some comments for which he is now seeking trade support. He would like every salvage dealer to write to the government and to put these points to their local MP so that they can have a voice in the decision. An important issue is that PPS15 is not a law debated in parliament.
The two main points are as follows:
Reusable materials arising from demolition and refurbishment need to be saved from demolition and refurbishment sites.
Confusion of listed building and planning officers about reuse is increasing global warming.

Bunny boiling for biofuel
Stockholm, Sweden - Authorities in Stockholm are giving bunny boiling a whole new meaning. The annual cull of the animals has started already in an aim to control their numbers in the cities parks. However, this year the carcasses are being incinerated to generate heat and power which has sparked outrage in some Swedes.

Mystery object

RICH Ellis blogger for Architectural Salvage & Antique Lumber is appealing to anyone who might be able to shed some light on the object above. He has been told it is a ceramic coal heater but is clueless as to if it is American or European and which period it is from. Any ideas please respond to his blog (blog link below).

Reuse of the Week:
Christmas tree furniture
Ever wondered what to do with your old Christmas tree after the holiday season. . .
Fabien Cappello has come up with a truly genius idea of taking scrap wood from Christmas trees. The Royal College of Art graduate has harvested some timber from the 1.8 million Christmas trees discarded on the streets of London each January. Motivated by the vast unuse, he turned the trunks into timber and the branches into dowels. Cappello even worked the needles into a new compressed board material. Cappello says the project is not about waste collection or recycling, but rather how people integrate with urban environments.
