Reuse consultation

By Thornton Kay

London West UK - Defra and the Welsh assembly are required to bring into force the provisions of the EU 2008 Waste Framework Directive by 12 December 2010 and have asked interested parties to comment on their draft proposals by 21 September 2010. This will embrace in law the priority order of the waste hierarchy - prevention, reuse, recycling, waste to energy and landfill - which should mean more being saved for reuse. Some of the proposals seem positive, some not so. One suggestion is to require a new narrative on waste transfer notes to explain whether material will be reused, recycled, waste to energy or landfill. Site Waste Management Plans might be extended in scope to catch more material than at present. Suggestions requiring planning applications to include statements about reuse, or to allow the imposition of reuse planning conditions, appear to have been rejected. If anyone wishes to be a part of an ad hoc trade group to run through the proposals, via a web conference, at 2pm on Friday 3 September 2010, in order to help submit a reclamation trade response, please contact Thornton Kay of Salvo by 22 August 2010. Tel 020 8400 6222.
